Career interview with Christelle Wielgus, visual merchandising coordinator

Christelle received her Lisaa diploma in 1994. After working for Yves Saint Laurent, she now takes care of the Asian-Pacific region for Prada.

- What does your job entail ?

As a visual merchandising coordinator, I am in charge of presenting products. I oversee the coherent image between products and windows throughout the company’s entire network of boutiques.

- What have been the steps of your professional career ?

After graduating from Lisaa, I began by an internship at Li Edelkoort’s trend office. This was good training, because it was a very transversal job, I did a bit of everything. Then, I did some small freelance jobs and worked for an Indian fabric company. In 1999, I attended IFM (Institut Français de la Mode). Then, I worked for Thierry Mugler before beginning at Yves Saint Laurent in 2002.

- Tell us a bit about Yves Saint Laurent

I arrived at an important time in the history of Yves Saint Laurent, right when the most media-oriented duo of the moment, Tom Ford and Dominico de Sole, gave a new breath of life to the brand. It was a fascinating period : new boutique concepts, shop openings all over Europe … At this time I began to have more impact with my work.

- What are your perspectives ?

I will soon move to Hong Kong to work in the Asia Pacific region for Prada. The circumstances will be different from my work at Yves Saint Laurent. I will not be at the main office. I will be receiving and transmitting information so the whole boutique network is homogenous, following in the image of Prada in Europe..

- How do you see the evolution in the area you work in ?

For me, the luxury industry has become … too industrial. There is a risk of asphyxiation because people have wanted to uniformize creativity too much, which stifles it.

- What advice would you like to give to Lisaa students and recent graduates ?

Forge your own personality in the classes teaching about professional life. It is important to know how to retain what is right for you.

Be curious and attentive to the fashion world but also be interested in other fields.
