Shelley Page, of Dreamworks, participated in Lisaa’s animation jury

Shelley Page is Dreamwork’s European representative. During her long career, she has worked on numerous, prestigious projects like « Who Framed Roger Rabbit ? » and « Shrek ».

- How long have you known about Lisaa ?

I met Renaud (note : Lisaa’s animation department director) five years ago at Imagina. In 2004, I visited the school to see Lisaa’s films. This year, I wanted to participate in the professional jury.

- Did you note any evolution ?

Yes, I was impressed by the progress over the past three years. Lisaa shows a range of extremely varied projects. Quality has strongly improved, in terms of both design and technical mastery.

- Quels ont été vos projets préférés pour la promotion 2007 ?

There were many : « After Shave » in 2D animation, « Livraison Matinale » in 3D animation, « Time Traveler’s Guide » or « Boom-ma-rang » which had good image quality. The projects were accompanied by magnificent portfolios.

I don’t only look at films but also at the « making of » and the demo reel : as a whole, they indicate the project’s coherence and the student’s qualities.

- Do French animation schools have specific qualities ?

I participate regularly in animation school juries in many countries : in the United States and Europe, of course, but also in India.

French schools are excellent from an artistic point of view and many, including Lisaa, have become high-performing for animation. Germany trains the best technicians, but French schools stand out creatively.

In the United States, the teaching approach is different. Students concentrate more on character development. They are more specialized but do not approach a script in the same way.

- A final word ?

Yes. I would like to add that at Dreamworks, we have hired many French animators over the years. They have considerable influence on our company’s productions .
